Come out Monday

Hello Friends & Jupiter Island Residents:

We hope this email finds you well and you all fared well during Hurricane Nicole last week. Our hearts go out to all those who lost their homes along the coast in Volusia County. Nicole ended up causing, “extensive beach erosion along the entire coast in Martin County,” as reported by the TCPalm.

One beachgoer in Martin County also made a “shocking discovery” last week when they found human remains that experts believe are connected to an ancient Indian burial ground. A Martin County Sheriff’s Officer told the newslast week the human remains found “would normally be about eight feet under the beach floor here.”

Similarly, Martin County Administrator Don Donaldson told the paper that, “18-foot seas and extreme high tides resulted in extensive beach erosion along the entire coast.” Hurricane Nicole is just the latest reminder of how critical our coastal restoration efforts are here on Jupiter Island. We were extremely fortunate that Nicole veered north of Jupiter Island.  Still, even with winds only around 60 mph, we have serious beach erosion, with substantial reduction in the height of the beach floor in some areas.  Imagine if the storm had been stronger.

While we hope we can continuously stay ahead of Mother Nature through major beach replenishment every few years, there is no guarantee that the beach can stand strong during hurricane force conditions.  Thank you John Duchock for your efforts on behalf of our fragile Island home.

Come Out on Monday!

We are asking for all of you to come out Monday for the next Town Commission Meeting. Please sign up here if you think you may be able to come or would like more information on the meeting.

The agenda for the meeting includes a discussion on our Land Development Regulations (LDRs), which are meant to balance the rights of private property owners on the Island with the preservation of the Island’s unique natural beauty.

What is decided on the LDRs and how they are implemented will shape the natural elements of Jupiter Island for generations. We are asking anyone who is able to attend the Monday meeting to come and lend their voice to this important conversation about our community’s future.

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Jupiter Island Forever Leaders
