It was cut from one mold and its counterpart cannot be found elsewhere.” – Circuit Court Judge Wallace Sample (1960s reflection on Jupiter Island) Friends, As many of you know, Jupiter Island Forever is a coalition of community members seeking to conserve the character of our Island by advocating for maximum community input as we consider the right balance between additional new development and our preservation legacy – started in many ways by Jupiter Island’s own Nathaniel Reed and his family. Currently, we are working with Boston University Professor Duncan FitzGerald to examine the ecological implications of opening more of our beachfront to residential development in certain areas of the Island. The results of Professor FitzGerald’s study will give us critical information about the potential consequences of additional new beachfront development, as well as the challenges of coastal erosion caused by hurricanes and other storms. We have sent copies of Professor FitzGerald’s study to the Town Commission and Town staff, and we look forward to sharing this information with you as well. While certain potential new beachfront development projects have been approved pending applicable appeals, we believe the entire Island would benefit from reviewing solid research on the effects of development, followed by a public discussion about how our community should balance these impacts while prioritizing our preservation legacy.
